LOCATION

The fourteenth of a series of IEEE workshops on Machine Learning for Signal Processing will be held in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. São Luís is located just in between Amazonia and the Northeast coast, and is a World Heritage island. It is the only capital in Brazil founded by the French. It has a wonderful Portuguese Historical Center, along with exquisite local seafood, and is close to one of the most beautiful deserts in the Word: Lençois Maranhenses, where pristine water lays lazily distributed onto several dunes.

HEALTH

Vaccination against yellow fever and protection aganist malaria is generally not recommended for São Luís; however,if you like to visit the Amazon, we strongly suggest careful protection.

Please note that the rules for issuing visas are different from country to country, and they are constantly changing.

We do not guarentee the informaion on this pages is correct. Please check with the nearest Brazilian Embassy or Consulate which will be located in your capital city or that of a neigboring country.

In general visa is required by all except the following:

  1. Nationals for touristic purposes only. All those travelling on business do need a visa (except nationals of the UK who will be granted an appropriate business visa on arrival, provided holding a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds to cover duration of stay. The length of stay permitted is normally up to 90 days but can be extended to a maximum of 180 days).
  2. Nationals of EU countries for touristic stays of up to 90 days; All travellers must be in possession of onward or return tickets and sufficient funds to cover their stay.
  3. Nationals of Andorra, Bahamas, Barbados, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Morocco, Namibia, Norway, Peru, Philippines, San Marino, Slovenia, South Africa, Surinam, Switzerland, Trinidad & Tobago, Vatican City and Venezuela for touristic stays of up to 90 days;
  4. Transit passengers continuing their journey to a third country by the same or first connecting flight, provided holding onward documentation and not leaving the airport.
Residents of Colombia and Venezuela should be vaccinated against yellow fever.

Normally, confirmation of enrollment in the Workshop should be enough to prove enrollment, for the purpose of obtaining the visa. The Consulates may require an official Invitation Letter.

Invitation letters will only be extended upon request and only after full registration and fees payment. Please contact Finance Chair Guilherme de Alencar Barreto. The invitation letter will refer only to the official period in which the workshop will take place (although the duration of pre and post-congress events may be added). If you require a longer stay, you will require separate documentation.

Note that invitation letters or other confirmation letters cannot be sent for people not registered for the Workshop. Also, please bear in mind that the MLSP organization are unable to influence the Embassy’s decision.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

By air
The closet airport is São Luis (SLZ). National Brazilian airline such as VARIG, VASP, TAM e GOL have regular dfaily flight to São Luis from Rio de Janeiro International Airport (GIG), São Paulo International airport, Guarulhos (GRU), International Pinto Martins Airport, Fortaleza (FOR), Val De Cans Airport, Belem (BEL), Brasilia International Airport, (BSB), or Eduardo Gomes International Airport, Manaus (MAO).

Anyone leaving from some European and America large cities can reach São Luis with one stop.

Local transportation
To get from Sao Luis Airport to the conference place the options are the following: By taxi about 20 minutes. By bus about 40 minutes.
